My name is Jennifer Hodgman, this is my third year teaching at Athlos Leadership Academy. I am excited to be here working with your students! I graduated from St. Cloud State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. I live in Ramsey, Minnesota. I am married and we have a son, who is in high school. In my free time I like to spend time at the cabin and the lake. My family spends lots of time at the race track during the summer racing! I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I am looking forward to working with my students this year helping them grow and reach their goals!

Math: We will continue Unit 8. This unit will focus on Shapes! We will learn the attributes of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. Learn about regular and irregular polygons. We will make equal groups and arrays and write number stories about them.

Homework: Your student will have math homework each night to complete and return to school the next day. 

Language Arts: We will start Unit 8. In this unit we will learn how wind and water shape the land. We will look at how we react to changes in nature, what causes earth changes, and how communities prepare for dangerous weather.  The assessment will be at the end of the week. Our phonics skill this week will focus on irregular plural nouns.

Spelling: This week’s spelling words are: feet, teeth, lives, men, women, shelves, children, people, fish, and sheep. Please help your student study these words every night. The test will be on Friday.

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night. 

Science: We will be starting or unit on Animal research. We will be working on this unit for 3-4 weeks, as we will work on this as a group.  We will research an animal and learn where they live, what kind of habitat. What they eat, what species they are and 3 facts about our animal. Ask you student what animal they picked!!

Hello second grade families! Our last week before Spring Break!

 

Math: We will start Unit 8. This unit will focus on Shapes! We will learn the attributes of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. Learn about regular and irregular polygons. We will make equal groups and arrays and write number stories about them.

Math: We will finish Unit 7. This unit focused on adding 4 or more numbers, measuring with yards and meters, collecting data and representing the data, shape attributes. We will assess Unit 7 mid-week!

Homework: Your student will have math homework each night to complete and return to school the next day. 

Language Arts: We will continue Unit 7, about Pioneers in Flight. We will learn about: How does understanding the past shape the future? Why are the accomplishments of people in the past important? How can historic achievements help everyone over time? Also, What way do advances in flight build on one another? The assessment will be at the end of the week. Our phonics skill this week will focus on inflectional endings with spelling changes.

Hello second grade families! Winter weather is here, please remember to send winter gear with your student every day for recess.

Math: We needed to take longer than we had thought to finish Unit 6. This unit focused on representing data, comparison number stories, interpreting number stories, animal number stories, two-step number stories, and recording addition strategies. We needed to review more with the students, to be ready for the assessment. So, we will take the unit assessment mid-week this week.

Homework: Your student will have math homework each night to complete and return to school the next day. 

Language Arts: We will continue Unit 6, we will learn about Tales that Teach Us and the lessons the tale teaches. The assessment will be at the end of the week. Our phonics skill this week will focus on vowel teams: oo and u.

Peek of the week for Dec. 2-6th

Hello second grade families! I hope everyone had a great break and Holiday!

 

Math: We will be finishing Unit 4, Place Value and Measurement. We will learn about Clocks and Telling Time, Telling Time to the Nearest 5 Minutes, A.M. & P.M., Place Value and Using Place Value to Compare Numbers. We will have the unit assessment at the end of the week.

Homework: Your student will have math homework each night to complete and return to school the next day. 

Language Arts: We will start Unit 4. We will learn about Different Characters and Different Points of View.

Spelling: This week’s phonics skill is r-Controlled Vowels: or, oar, ore. This week’s words are: fork, oars, more, store, corn, roar, before, horn, sports, storm. Please study the spelling words with your child every night at home! The test will be on Friday.

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night. 

Science: We have started Unit 3 in Social Studies! In Unit 3 we will learn about Government and how it works.

Other Reminders:

Please remember to send a healthy snack to school with your student every day.

The winter weather is here, please remember to send a winter jacket, hat and gloves with your student every day for recess. If your student wants to wear a sweater or sweatshirt during class, it MUST be an Athlos uniform approved color and cannot have any graphics, words, or designs, unless it is purchased Athlos Spirit wear. They are only allowed to wear it during class if it is uniform approved.
