Bio

Hello, my name is Ms. Crockett.
I am so excited to be your childs second grade teacher! This is my third year teaching at Athlos Leadership Academy, but this year is my 9th year teaching.  I graduated from Southwest Minnesota State University with my degree in Early Childhood Education Birth-3rd grade. When I am not teaching I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, being outside and taking naps. I can't wait to get to know your family! Hello second grade families!

 

Math: We will be starting Unit 5. We will learn about addition and subtraction. We will explore: Using coins to buy things, Counting up with coins, Coin calculations, and Exploring arrays, Time and Shapes.

Homework: Your student will have math homework each week.

Language Arts: We will continue Unit 4. We will learn about Different Characters, Different Points of View.

Spelling: This week’s phonics skill is r-Controlled Vowels: ear, eer, ere. This week’s words are: year, deer, near, clear, cheer, fear, ears, here, steer, and hear. Please study the spelling words with your child every night at home! The test will be on Friday.

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night. 

Science: We have started Unit 3 in Social Studies! In Unit 3 we will learn about Government and how it works.

Other Reminders:

Please remember to send a healthy snack to school with your student every day. The weather is getting cooler, please remember to send a jacket with your student each day for recess. If your student wants to wear a sweater or sweatshirt during class, it MUST be an Athlos uniform approved color and cannot have any graphics, words, or designs, unless it is purchased Athlos Spirit wear. They are only allowed to wear it during class if it is uniform approved.

Tree Parade Ornaments & Decorations- We have our Teacher Tree Parade coming up next week. We need you help with sending in any decorations, ornaments, garland or any other Christmas things you are willing to donate to our class. NO GLASS decorations please! This is an event that the students have so much fun decorating the teacher and watching the parade! Please send things with your student this week!

Hello second grade families! We only have 2 days of school this week!

Math: We will be continuing Unit 4, Place Value and Measurement. We will learn about Clocks and Telling Time, Telling Time to the Nearest 5 Minutes, A.M. & P.M., Place Value and Using Place Value to Compare Numbers.

Homework: Your student will have math homework each week!

Language Arts: We will be continuing our unit on Narrative Writing. We will learn what a narrative story is and be writing our own narratives!

Spelling: NO SPELLING THIS WEEK!!

Science: We have started Unit 3 in Social Studies! In Unit 3 we will learn about Government and how it works.

Hello second grade families! It was great to meet with all the families that came to conferences.

 

Math: This week we will be finishing Unit 3 on More Fact Strategies. We will learn about addition strategies, subtraction from addition, fact families, subtraction strategies using counting up and counting back, -0 & -1 fact strategies. We will assess Unit 3 on Friday.

Homework: Your student will have math homework each week to complete.

Language Arts: We will be on Unit 3, Week 2. We will learn how to determine the importance of a text, recognize the Central Idea (Main Topic) of a story. We will also learn how to use text clues to understand the meaning of compound words. Our phonics skill this week is r-controlled vowel “ar”.

Spelling: Spelling words this week have r-controlled vowel “ar”: car, star, march, smart, hard, farm, large, shark, garden, and yard. Please help your child practice the words every night. The test will be on Friday.

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night. 

Social Studies: We will finish Unit 2 on People, Places, and Nature. We will learn what the world is like. We will learn how to read and understand a map, learn about different physical features of the earth, why people move place to place and the different types of living environments.  We will assess Unit 2 at the end of the week.

Math: This week we will be reviewing and assessing Unit 2. We practiced several different Fact Strategies in Unit 2 and will show what we learned!

Homework: Your student will have math homework each week.

Language Arts: We will learn what an opinion is and how to write an opinion paragraph.

Spelling: No spelling this week due to the short week!

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night. 

Science: We will have our Unit 1 assessment on Properties of Matter. We will show what we learned about how different materials can be used and what we learned about solids, liquids, and gases.

Math: This week we will continue Unit 2 on Fact Strategies. We will learn about the turn-around rule for addition, subtraction and the turn-around rule, odd and even numbers, patterns and shapes, even numbers and equal addends, name-collection boxes.

Homework: Your student will have math homework each week to complete and return to school. 

Language Arts: This week we will continue Unit 2 on Characters and Learn and Grow. We will learn what we can do when we face problems. We will have the Unit 2, week 2 test on Thursday. The phonics skills this week will focus on long e and vowel teams and spellings.

Spelling: This week’s words are: here, clean, happy, key, queen, leaf, piece, funny, thief, and need. Please practice these words with your student every day. The spelling test will be at the end of the week.

Math: This week we will be starting Unit 2 on Fact Strategies. We will cover grouping by 10’s, addition number stories, doubles and combinations of 10, making-10 strategy, and near-doubles strategy this week.

Homework: Your student will have math homework each week to complete and return to school the next week. 

Language Arts: This week we will start Unit 2 on Characters and Learn and Grow. We will learn what we can do when we face problems. The phonics skills this week will focus on long o and vowel teams and spellings.

Spelling: This week’s words are: broke, both, grow, globe, toe, bowl, float, throw, roast, and going. Please practice these words with your student every day. The spelling test will be at the end of the week.

Social Studies: We finish our first unit in Social Studies, so now we will switch to the first unit in Science.

Math: This week we will be finishing Unit 1 with reviewing skip counting, comparing numbers with greater than, less than, and equal numbers. We will review and have the Unit 1 Test at the end of this week!

Homework: Your student will have math homework weekly. 

Language Arts: This week we will finish Unit 1, and learn about the different habitats around the world and how living things get what they need to survive. This week’s phonics skills focus long vowels and vowel teams: a, ai, ea, ay, a_e.

Spelling: This week’s words are- break, chain, April, great, mail, paint, play, blame, cake, and stay. Please practice these words with your student. The spelling test will be at the end of the week. 

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night.

Math: This week we will continue Unit 1 reviewing finding equivalent names for numbers, making combinations of 10, even and odd number patterns and skip counting.

Homework: Your student will get a new homework packet each Monday and it will be due the following Monday.

Language Arts: This week we will continue Unit 1 and learn about the different habitats around the world and how living things get what they need to survive. This week’s phonics skills focus on closed and open syllables.

Spelling: This week’s words are- go, we, she, no, open, den, dentist, napkin, problem, and silent. Please practice these words with your student. The spelling test will be at the end of the week.

Hello second grade families! We made it through our first week of school! We spent the week getting to know one another, building community in our classrooms. We learned routines and expectations for this school year.

 

 

Math: This week we will begin Unit 1 reviewing adding and subtracting using number lines, tally marks, coin values and values of coin combinations, and using patterns to help solve math problems.

 

Homework: Homework will start in the next couple of weeks :)

 

Language Arts: This week we will begin Unit 1 and learn about the different habitats around the world and how living things get what they need to survive. This week’s phonics skills focus on short vowel sounds, a, e, i, o, u and blends at the beginning of a word.

 

Spelling: This week’s words are- graph, stand, chest, fetch, flip, this, cloth, shop, just, budge. Please practice these words with your student. The spelling test will be at the end of the week.

 

Homework: Please have your student read for at least 20 minutes every night.

 

Social Studies: We begin Chapter 1 about Families Today and in the Past. We will learn how does life change throughout history. We will learn about family, different kinds of families, and life then and now.
