Bio

Hello! I am Mary Byrne, and I will be your child’s 1st grade teacher. I am so excited and honored to welcome your child to my classroom.  This will be my second year teaching at Athlos Leadership Academy but I have taught for many years at the primary level.  

 

I received my teaching degree from Mankato State University and my Masters' degree from St. Thomas University in Special Education.  In my most recent experience I served as a literacy coach.  

 

My most favorite thing about my job is teaching my Firsties to LOVE reading!!!!  I am beyond excited to Welcome all of my students and families to my classroom this year!

Hello first grade families!

 Here is a look at the week!

Language Arts: This week we will begin unit eight in our benchmark curriculum.  Unit eight focuses on Earth Science, specifically exploring topics like climate, weather, natural hazards, attractions, and landforms.

We will work on reading and spelling long “a” words.

Spelling: This week’s spelling words are: chair, stair, care, scare, bear, wear, artist, garden, guitar, & radar.

Spelling and reading comprehension assessments will be given Friday.  

Math: This week we will finish unit 7 and begin unit eight in our everyday math curriculum. Unit eight focus on mental arithmetic, money concepts, and fractions, including practicing adding and subtracting larger numbers, working with fact families, and exploring the concepts of halves and fourths.

Social Studies: This week we will continue an economic unit focusing is on basic concepts like identifying wants vs needs, understanding the roles of producers and consumers in a community, recognizing how people earn money through jobs, and making simple choices about spending and saving to meet their needs and wants. 

Nightly student homework: spelling words, homework packet, practice sight words, and read for twenty minutes. If you need another sight word list let me know and I can email one to you.

 Here is a look at the week!

Language Arts: This week we will continue unit seven in our Benchmark curriculum. We will focus on the theme of "past, present, and future, we will learn how the past influences the present and future by reading stories about historical events and people, essentially exploring the concept of history through texts.

We will focus on geometry and attributes of shapes, where students learn to identify, classify, and compare different shapes based on their characteristics like sides, corners, and vertices. We will also continue to practice addition and subtraction facts through related fact families.

Hello first grade families!

 Here is a look at the week!

Language Arts: This week we will continue unit seven in our Benchmark curriculum. We will focus on the theme of "past, present, and future”, we will learn how the past influences the present and future by reading stories about historical events and people, essentially exploring the concept of history through texts.

We will work on reading and spelling long “e” words.

Spelling: This week’s spelling words are: eagle, eager, even, equal, field, thief, sweep, sweet, money, & happy.

Spelling and reading comprehension assessments will be given Friday.  

Math: This week we will continue unit seven in math. We will focus on geometry and attributes of shapes, where students learn to identify, classify, and compare different shapes based on their characteristics like sides, corners, and vertices. We will also continue to practice on addition and subtraction facts through related fact families.

 This week we will complete our map unit. We have learned basic map concepts like identifying cardinal directions (north, south, east, west), using a map key to understand symbols, locating familiar places in their community on a map, distinguishing between land and water, and identifying our state and country on a simple map.

We will be starting a new unit on an economic unit focusing on basic concepts like identifying wants vs needs, understanding the roles of producers and consumers in a community, recognizing how people earn money through jobs, and making simple choices about spending and saving to meet their needs and wants.

This unit we will focus on the theme of "past, present, and future, we will learn how the past influences the present and future by reading stories about historical events and people, essentially exploring the concept of history through age-appropriate texts.

We will work on reading and spelling long o words.

Spelling: This week’s spelling words are: window, home, grow, slow, only, owner, ocean, roads, goal, & hope. 

Spelling and reading comprehension assessments will be given Thursday.

Math: This week we will begin unit seven in math. Unit 7 focuses primarily on "time" concepts, including telling time to the hour and half hour, understandings in the concept of "a.m." and "p.m.", and relating time to daily routines and activities, while using visual aids like clocks and timelines. We will also continue to practice addition and subtraction facts through related fact families.

Language Arts: This week we will finish unit five in our benchmark curriculum. This week we will learn how technology makes school and work places better and the impact of technology on daily life and the impact that it will make in the future.

We will write complete sentences using nouns, verbs, and adjectives. We will introduce narrative writing.

We will work on reading and spelling soft G words.

Spelling: This week’s spelling words are: gem, gentle, giant, giraffe, age, page, huge, edge, bridge, &, dodge.

Spelling and reading comprehension assessments will be given Thursday.

Math: This week we will complete unit five in math. This week we will review place value. We will take unit five math assessment on Thursday.

Nightly student homework: spelling words, homework packet, practice sight words, and read for twenty minutes. If you need another sight word list let me know and I can email one to you. Homework is due on Thursday of this week.

For each child, enter in the two prompts that your school requires. They are:

Scheduling

Each colored square represents an available meeting time. The legend shows which teacher corresponds to which color, and the times increase as you go down the page.

(Note: you will not see all of the teachers at your school, just the teachers that your child(ren) have homeroom classes with.)

Hello first grade families! Happy new year!!!

 Here is a look at the week!

We will be doing winter fast bridge testing and completing assessments on IXL to see student’s growth so far in LA, Math and Science this week. This week we will be reviewing skills learned so far this year. We will not have spelling this week.

Language Arts: This week we will review what we have learned so far this year. We will read stories and discuss the character, setting, and retelling the story of the stories we read.

This week we will complete sentences using verbs and nouns. We will work on reading and spelling words we have already learned this year.

Spelling: There is no spelling words or spelling test this week!

Math: This week we will review what we have learned so far this year. We will be working on IXL assessments.

Science: This week we will discuss similarities and differences between plants and animals.  

Nightly student homework: spelling words, homework packet, practice sight words, and read for twenty minutes. If you need another sight word list let me know and I can email one to you.

New Year’s Resolution Calendar: This month each student will have a January calendar in their yellow homework folder. We talked about how we all need to become better readers. Each student has decided to read and work on sight words for 30 minutes each night. Each night after they read please give them a smiley face on their calendar. If they read each night for 30 minutes and turn in their calendar on January 31st they will be invited to a special reading party in February!

Hello first grade families! Here is a look at the week.

Language Arts: This week we will complete unit four. We will review point of view, who is telling the story. We will take a point of view and comprehension assessment on Thursday.

This week we will complete sentences using verbs and nouns. We will work on reading and spelling three letter blends.

This week spelling words are: three, throw, throat, street, strong, square, sprain, spit, splash, & scrap.

Spelling test will be on Friday.

Math: This week we will complete unit four. We will review measurement and data. We will take the unit four math assessment on Thursday.  

Science: This week we will continue to learn about the effects of climate change due to humans.  

Nightly student homework: spelling words, homework packet, practice sight words, and read for twenty minutes. If you need another sight word list let me know and I can email one to you.

Hello first grade families! Here is a look at the week.

Language Arts: This week we will continue unit four. We will learn about the point a view, who is telling the story in the books we read.

This week we will complete sentences using verbs and nouns. We will work on reading and spelling digraphs ch, tch, & wh.

This week spelling words are: child, children, check, lunch, reach, while, white, whisper, lunch, & sandwich.

Spelling test will be on Friday.

Math: This week we will continue unit four. We will be learning about measurement and data. This week we will focus on parts of the clock, telling time to the hour and half hour.

Science: This week we will learn about the effects of climate change how it has affected polar bears.

Nightly student homework: spelling words, homework packet, practice sight words, and read for twenty minutes. If you need another sight word list let me know and I can email one to you.

All students need to be handing in their homework packet EACH week!
